  Benny Goodman è una piccola autorità per quanto riguarda il grande jazz, non solo per la sua maestria nel clarinetto, ma anche perché riuscì ad affermare questo genere al grande pubblico. Pensate che nel '38 diede il primo concerto jazz nella famosa Carnegie Hall di New York, che fino ad allora aveva ospitato esclusivamente orchestre di musica classica. Immaginatevi quindi signorotti con pelliccia e panciotti a tenere il ritmo con il dito, al suono di questa musica così sorprendente e piano piano, senza accorgersene, agitare un po' la gamba, poi anche l'altra e in men che non si dica, rendersi conto che quelle comode poltrone erano troppo strette per contenere le ritmiche di Krupa, di Russin, James e Goodman nel loro Sing, sing, sing. Dopo questo enorme successo, il Re bianco dello Swing continuò le sue innumerevoli collaborazioni, con tutti i grandi e piccoli del jazz di tutto il mondo, diffondendo ancora di più questo genere.

  Benny Goodman is a well-known musician to the great jazz lovers, not only for his mastery with the clarinet, but also because he was able to assert this kind of music to the world. Imagine that in '38 he gave the first jazz concert in the Carnegie Hall in New York, a really famous place that until then had hosted exclusively classical orchestras. Just try to imagine how it would has been great to see some posh lord with fur vests, to keep the beat with the finger, and without realizing it, shake a little the leg, then the other one and in less than no time, understand that those comfortable seats were too narrow to contain the rhythmic of Krupa, Russin, James and Goodman in their Sing, sing, sing. After this huge success, the white King of Swing continued his countless collaborations, with all the big and small of jazz from all over the world, spreading even more jazz music.

Era da un po' che mi dicevo di fare una piccola rubrica musicale e ora eccola qua (speriamo che duri). Ora come ora ho previsto una trentina di musicisti jazz imperdibili, scanditi in post settimanali (tranquilli, non ci credo nemmeno io), poi si vedrà. Non sono assolutamente un esperto di questo genere (ne di altri), ma ascolto abbastanza musica e mi diverto a fare 'ste robe.

  It's been a while since I thought to do a little music column and now here it is (hope it lasts). At the moment I wanted to focus on jazz, envisaging at least 30 musicians, with a weekly post, and after that we will see. I'm not at all an expert of this kind of music (of every kind), I just do listen a lot of it, and have fun. Most of the info are taken from Wikipedia.

  Gli anni '20 saranno stati l'epoca del proibizionismo per alcuni americani puritani, ma non sicuramente per i frequentatori del Cotton Club di Harlem, dove la birra veniva servita a barili e le giovani ballerine vestite di abiti succinti, intrattenevano un pubblico rigorosamente bianco. Ed è proprio in questo locale dichiaratamente “White only”, che un giovane pianista afroamericano, in arte Duke Ellington, entrò a far parte della storia del jazz. Pianista, compositore, adattatore e direttore d'orchestra, il Duca dello swing deliziava, orde di yenkees fascisti coi capelli ingelatinati, con quel suo Jungle style, evocativo di un immaginario di africa esotica e primitiva, che ai bianchi piaceva molto. Con gli anni Ellington riuscì a comporre e modellare la sua orchestra (che durò trent'anni), circondandosi così di musicisti straordinari, che dagli anni '30 in poi lo aiutarono a trovare un sound più complesso e particolare. Duke Ellington portò il jazz a una nuova fase di maturazione e blablabla... insomma ascoltatelo che ne vale la pena.

  The '20s have been the era of Prohibition for some American Puritans , but definitely not for those who frequented the Cotton Club in Harlem, where the beer was served in barrels and young girls dressed in skimpy clothes , amused a strictly white audience . It is in this place avowedly "White only", that a young African-American pianist , called Duke Ellington, became part of the history of jazz. Pianist, composer , and bandleader of his orchestra , the Duke of swing, treated hordes of fascists yenkees, with his Jungle style, to evocate a stereotype of an exotic and primitive Africa, that white people liked. Over the years, Ellington was able to compose and shape his orchestra ( which lasted thirty years ) , surrounding himself with excellent musicians, that from the 30s onwards, helped him to find a more complex sound.
